What is the Adoption Day?

May 11th : It is a legal holiday in Korea. May is considered family month in Korea, and the 11th was selected to signify that 1 family plus 1 adoptee can make a new home

In 1953, after the Korean War, many orphans, biracial children, and single mothers’ children were judged and discriminated against by society. They found a new family through Inter-country adoption.

There are various perspectives on domestic adoption and family preservation versus adoption. Nonetheless, the goal of adoption is always to protect the child, ensure their well being, and help them grow up in a healthy environment.

It's important to provide lifelong social support to adoptees and adoptive families in various ways. When issues and needs related to adoption come up, the city should offer appropriate guidance and assistance. If these issues are not addressed promptly, any challenges that arise in life could be mistakenly attributed to the negative effects of adoption.

Based on these needs, the government has prepared the "<Special Act on Domestic Adoption>" and the "<Act on International Adoption>" bills for advanced adoption. These bills will go into effect on July 25 next year.

For many years, KWS has been providing support for legislation to protect the best interests of children and promote a healthy adoption culture. With significant changes ahead, KWS is working hard to offer counsel to qualified adoptive parents and to protect the children eligible for adoption.

It is time to take an interest in making the domestic adoption system work properly by reminding the meaning of adoption.
